Rippling of two-dimensional materials by line defects

2020

Two-dimensional materials and their mechanical properties are known to be profoundly affected by rippling deformations. However, although ripples are fairly well understood, less is known about their origin and controlled modification. Here, motivated by recent reports of laser-controlled creation of line defects in graphene, we investigate how line defects could be used to control rippling in graphene and other two-dimensional materials. By sequential multi-scale coupling of density-functional tight-binding and continuum elasticity simulations, we quantify the amount of rippling when the number and the cumulative length of the line defects increase. Simulations show that elastic sheets wit…

Understanding and Controlling Food Protein Structure and Function in Foods: Perspectives from Experiments and Computer Simulations

2020

The structure and interactions of proteins play a critical role in determining the quality attributes of many foods, beverages, and pharmaceutical products. Incorporating a multiscale understanding of the structure–function relationships of proteins can provide greater insight into, and control of, the relevant processes at play. Combining data from experimental measurements, human sensory panels, and computer simulations through machine learning allows the construction of statistical models relating nanoscale properties of proteins to the physicochemical properties, physiological outcomes, and tastes of foods. This review highlights several examples of advanced computer simulations at mol…

Comparison of mechanical properties and composition of magnetron sputter and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition aluminum nitride films

2018

A comparative study of mechanical properties and elemental and structural composition was made for aluminum nitride thin films deposited with reactive magnetron sputtering and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). The sputtered films were deposited on Si (100), Mo (110), and Al (111) oriented substrates to study the effect of substrate texture on film properties. For the PEALD trimethylaluminum–ammonia films, the effects of process parameters, such as temperature, bias voltage, and plasma gas (ammonia versus N2/H2), on the AlN properties were studied. All the AlN films had a nominal thickness of 100 nm. Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis showed the sputtered films t…

Evaluation of radiation stability of electron beam irradiated Nafion® and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes

2022

Proton exchange membranes (PEM), which have been commonly used in fuel cells have raised interest for the application in harsh environments involving ionizing radiation. Therefore, radiation stability and ability to sustain their functionality under the radiation environment are of great interest. Within this study, electron beam irradiation in dose range from 50 to 500kGy was used to evaluate the effects of radiation on the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of two types of PEM: commercial Nafion®117 and sulfonated poly(ether-ether-ketone) (SPEEK) with high degree of sulfonation (DS = 0.75±0.5). SPEEK membrane presented higher mechanical and thermal stability compared to that of Na…

Synthesis, structure and photophysical properties of a highly luminescent terpyridine-diphenylacetylene hybrid fluorophore and its metal complexes

2014

A new fluorescent terpyridyl-diphenylacetylene hybrid fluorophore 4'-[4-{(4-methoxyphenyl)ethynyl}phenyl]-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, L, was synthesized via Sonogashira cross-coupling of 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and 4-ethynylanisole in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4/CuI as a catalyst. The solid state structure of L shows a trans arrangement of pyridine nitrogen atoms along the interannular bond in the terpyridine domain. Five transition metal complexes of L, {[FeL2](CF3SO3)2 (1), [ZnL2](ClO4)2 (2), [CdL2](ClO4)2 (3), [RuL2](PF6)2 (4), and PtMe3IL (5)}, have also been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray analysis. The X-ray crystal structu…

Analysis of fluid flow through porous media based on x-ray micro-tomographic reconstructions

2010

This thesis deals with creeping fluid flow through fibrous porous materials. Permeability through a porous medium is a measure of the ability of the material to transmit fluids. For testing and demonstration purposes the permeability values of a few fibrous heterogeneous materials, namely synthetic non-woven felt, wet pressing felt, cardboard, newsprint and hardwood paper, were measured experimentally. Reconstructions of the same materials under similar compression states were captured by x-ray micro-tomography. The actual microscopic pore structure thus obtained was utilised in the numerical lattice-Boltzmann analysis for solving the fluid flow permeability of the materials. Agreement betw…

In vivo muscle mechanics during human locomotion : fascicle-tendinous tissue interaction during stretch-shortening cycle exercises

2005

Masaki Ishikawan tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, kuinka lihasten ja jännerakenteiden yhteistoiminta hyödyntää elastista energiaa ihmisen liikkumisessa. Ulomman reisilihaksen ja kolmipäisen pohjelihaksen lihassolujen ja jännerakenteiden pituuden muutoksia tarkasteltiin liikkeiden aikana ultraäänitekniikalla yhdessä ainutlaatuisen jänteen voimaa mittaavan optisen kuituanturin kanssa. The present series of studies were designed to examine how the interaction between muscle fibers and tendinous tissues (TT) were modulated for effective utilization of elastic energy during stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercises. By combining the in vivo direct recordings of tendon force with fascicle length change…

The effect of steric hindrance on the packing of elongated objects

2016

Fibres of various materials can be deposited to form planar mats of fibres. These kinds of structures have gained substantial attention owing to their direct relation to both large industrial fields, such as paper and nonwovens, and biological structures, such as natural networks of fibrin, actin and collagen. In addition, similar structures are important in new emerging fields such as flexible electronics and tissue engineering. The physical properties of these structures are directly related to the connectivity of the network, thus a thorough understanding of the contact formation of the system is of great importance from both a scientific viewpoint as well as for its application in the e…
